Abstract

This study aims in mainly to find out the radon concentration and its exhalation rate in Um-Ara region, Southeastern Desert, Egypt. There are large areas of granite (300 Km2) which is used also as building materials. We are investigated whether the radon levels emitted from that granite are harmful or not for the workers and living humans in this regions.(Can Technique) using nuclear track detectors, CR-39 and LR-115II is used in present study. The area to be studied was divided into two parts: Western area contains 10 trenches, and Eastern area having 6 trenches, samples were collected from these trenches, the distance between sample and the other 100-300 m. 30 sample are collected from Western area and 13 samples from Eastern. The samples were in the form of blocks of granite rocks, and they were crushed, dried by an oven to get rid of moisture, then there are sifted by a mish of 1mm diameter. Each sample was then put in a plastic box with 16 cm high in diameter 9.5 cm. The plastic detectors were cut into small areas (1.5 × 1.5 cm2) and paste to the bottom face of the plastic cover for the purpose of irradiation, this can tightly sealed for 60 days to reach secular equilibrium. The irradiated detector, were collected from cans carefully and conduct chemical etching process in order to detect the hidden track behind the sensitive material of the detector, thus detectors become ready for the process of counting and scanning by optical microscope. from the calculated density of tracks (number per cm2). The concentration radon and its exhalation rate were calculated. The radon concentration in Western area was found to be between 13.46 ± 307.86 Bqm-3 at the sample no. 26 and 124.13±26180.22 Bqm-3 at the sample no 7.
