Abstract

In recent years, most nurses do not have adequate knowledge about different types of occupational hazards, and others may not apply protective measures properly even they know. However, many hospitals are built and managed without due concern for the health of the workers. The aim of the present study was to design self-learning package to prevent occupational hazards facing nursing staff at Shebin El Kom University Hospital and Nasser Institute Hospital. Study design; A quasi-experimental research design, with pre-post-and follow-up assessments was used in conducting this stud. Settings: The present study was conducted at Shebin El-kom University Hospital and Nasser Institute Hospital in specified critical care units and general departments. Tools; Were used in this study namely: knowledge test (k) questionnaire (pre, post, follow-up), self-administered occupational hazards questionnaire, observational checklist (OC1) (pre, post, follow-up), and work environment observational checklist (OC2). Subjects; Data was collected from 2 groups. group I: included a convenience sample of (100) staff nurses. group II: All the head nurses from the previously mentioned hospitals. Results; the main findings of the present study revealed that: nursing staff ’ knowledge about occupational hazards was improved throughout post and follow up test than in pretest, psychological hazard was the highly reported hazard that nursing staff were faced at the study settings, nursing staff’ performance regarding preventing occupational hazards was improved throughout post and follow up observation than in pretest observation, and both hospitals under the study were located in grad (B) of hospital safety index. Conclusion: the application of self-learning package has led to improve nursing staff’ knowledge about different types of occupational hazards after implementation and after three-month follow-up. Also associated with improvement in the nursing staff’ performance regarding preventing different occupational hazards at the study settings. Psychological hazard was the highly reported hazards that nursing staff at the study settings were faced and there were many defects in the study settings that were predisposed nursing staff to be faced with different types of occupational hazards. Recommendation; Self-learning package about different types of occupational hazards and how to prevent it should be distributed for large scale of nurses in different health care sectors.
