Abstract

The main goal of the thesis is focused on the synthesis of five hydrazone compounds namely: 2,3-butanedione bis(isonicotinyl-hydrazone) [BBINH]; 2,3-butanedione isonicotinylhydrazone [BINH]; N1,N2-bis(2,3-butanedione-hydrazone)oxalohydrazide [H2BOH]; malonoyl bis(2,3-butanedionehydrazone) [MBH] and succinoyl bis(2,3-butanedionehydrazone) [SBH]) as well as their metal complexes with Co2+, Ni2+ Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ ions. The ligands are characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR, 1HNMR and MS) while the prepared complexes are characterized by elemental, conductance and thermal analyses, spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR, 1HNMR, MS) and magnetic moments. The structures of the ligands were analyzed by X-ray crystallography and some complexes were elucidated by drawing the molecular modeling. The thesis also includes the biological activity of some of these compounds against some bacteria and fungi. Elucidation of the work in this thesis is summarized as: • Chapter I includes introduction consisting of a literature survey on the importance of hydrazone compounds in view of their medicinal, analytical and industrial applications. The review also includes a brief literature survey on some publications concerning the complexation of hydrazones related to the studied compounds. • Chapter II covers the experimental part and demonstrates the experiments used in this work. It includes list of reagents, stock solutions along with the physical measurements and instrumentation. The preparation procedures of ligands and their complexes were also discussed in detail. In addition, this chapter includes the procedures for separation and microdetermination of Zr4+ ions in aqueous solutions as well as the antimicrobial activity of the ligands and their metal complexes. • Chapter III deals with the results and discussion.
