Abstract

Background: Viral hepatitis remains a serious problem and a public health priority in Egypt and major cause of morbidity and mortality particularly in developing countries. Aims of the study: To determine the sero-prevalence of both HBV and HCV infection in a group of infertile couples, search for risk factors associated with this condition and assess the knowledge of the couples regarding viral hepatitis and give health education to prevent or reduce spreading of infection. Methods and materials: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Women’s Health Center at Assiut University hospital from inpatient (Gynecology department). The sample included a total of 200 infertile couples according to the budget from Assiut University. Data collected by using; Tool (1): interviewing questionnaire included Personal data, Obstetrical, menstrual, Family planning, sexual, infertility, medical, surgical and past history. Tool (2): serological blood tests to detect infection with HCV and HBV by (ELISA). Tools (3) assessment knowledge of couples regarding the HCV& HBV Results: The mean age of females and males was (29.2±9.8 & 34.5±11.3 respectively) years, the prevalence of HCV was 8% (4.5% females and 3.5% males) and prevalence of HBV was 4% (1% females and 3% males),Surgery and dental procedure the main risk factors for hepatitis infection. Couples with high educated level had more knowledge than illiterate couples in all parameters of disease while in general the both gender groups, either educated or uneducated have satisfactory or poor knowledge about hepatitis B and C and females had less knowledge than males. Conclusion: There is a poor of knowledge among infertile couples toward Hepatitis B and C. Recommendation: More HBV and HCV researches for a larger number of people from different geographical areas to increase knowledge toward blood borne diseases.
