Abstract

Ageing has become a medical and social problem in today’s world. As the elderly populations grow, so do demands on health care services. Old age is not a disease but there is a greater probability of illness and general biological decline.
A cross-sectional study in the catchment area of the family medicine unit in Kom-Ashfeen village in El-Qalyobia governorate in Egypt was carried out. All subjects are 60 years and above. The mean age was 66.95±6.5 years. They were 419 and (56.6%) of them were males and (43.3%) were females. About 50% of the seniors are illiterate, about 57% of the study subjects are married and 82.4% of the seniors live with family.
It aimed to raise elderly health care standards in the primary health care unit which may ultimately increase the utilization of the elderly to the family health service in the unit through assessment of the health status of the elderly as regards activities of daily livings, instrumental activities of daily livings, mental status assessment and nutritional assessment, visual and auditory assessment.
Also it aimed to screen some diseases as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, malnutrition and dementia and to design a plan for health education sessions at the family health center.
Health status assessment was evaluated by history taking and examination for medical problems as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, liver disease, renal diseases and dementia. History also includes medications regularly taken by the seniors and history of surgical intervention. The results of this study showed that (68.3%) of the seniors have medical problems. The most common diseases are hypertension, diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid diseases respectively. About 33% of the elderly were newly diagnosed to be diabetics.
About (57%) of the study subjects are assisted in some activities of daily livings (ADL).About 69%of the subjects have no mental problem. About (29%) of the subjects have no nutritional problem and (71%) with possible malnutrition by nutrition screening score and (72%) of the subjects are with good hearing.
Anemia is one of the most common hematological conditions found among the geriatric population.
Beside geriatric assessment we designed a health education program for elderly formed from 6 sessions fall prevention, how to take medications, healthy nutrition, importance of exercise, improvement of social activity and the way to healthy and active Ageing.Contents of the folders of the elderly were completed.
In this study we recommended to improve attitudes towards practical geriatric assessment (functional, nutritional, sensory and cognitive assessment), using geriatric assessment tools used in our study as interview questionnaire and regular examination every 6 months by family physicians and general practitioner.
