Abstract

Dental caries is a major public health problem and the most prevalent public health disease worldwide. Dental caries affects three aspects of daily living, namely systemic health, body weight and children’s growth and quality of life. This is due to dental pain and premature tooth loss that results in difficulty in eating, speaking, sleeping and socializing. It can also lead to problems related to learning because of substantial school absence and the increasing the risk of decay in the permanent teeth. Additionally, Parents’ literacy in oral health is an important factor contributing to children’s overall health (Piovesan, Antunes, Mendes, Guedes & Guedes, 2012; Marcenes et al., 2013). Public health nurse role is very important in the early identification of children at high risk for dental caries to promote oral and general health of the children (AAPD, 2010). The aim of this study was to determine dental caries risk factors among preschool children.
A descriptive design was used to achieve the aim of the study. The study was conducted at eight kindergartens schools in Shebin El Kom City, Menoufia Governorate. Random sample of 500 preschool children aged 3-5 years and their mothers.
