Abstract

Asthma has grown to be one of the leading chronic illnesses throughout the world, affecting more than 300 million people of all age, asthma characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, intermittent airflow obstruction, bronchial hyper-responsiveness, and an underlying inflammation. The chronicity of bronchial asthma and the fear of steroid therapy cause many patients to seek alternative methods of treatment such as Acupuncture, herbal medicine and massage therapy. The widespread application of acupuncture includes the treatment of infections, inflammatory diseases (rheumatoid arthritis), autonomic dysfunction, neurological diseases (migraine, pain), cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases like asthma, drug abuse, psychological disorders and many other illnesses. Acupuncture has an effect on bronchial asthma through its anti inflammatory effect as acupuncture can modulate levels of cytokines and other anti-inflammatory mediators. Direct bronchodilating effect on patients who showed immediate bronchodilating response of FEV1 after acupuncture, and a similar bronchodilator response was reproducible with repeated acupuncture.Since the most children are afraid of needles, they would be unwilling to undergo acupuncture and the parents may hesitate to expose them to additional pain and stress for this reason, laser acupuncture is emerging as an alternative to needle acupuncture. Violet laser needle acupuncture is a new optical method for stimulating different acupuncture points continuously and simultaneously.Abundant scientific literature provides evidence of anti-inflammatory effects of laser light applied directly to tissues affected by an inflammatory process, and numerous studies have proved both local and remote effects of specific laser light on immune processes. In our thesis we studied the effect of low power multichannel laser acupuncture on a group of children that had diagnosed as established bronchial asthma (partially controlled and uncontrolled) on 20 child by gave them laser acupuncture sessions at rate 3 sessions per week to be a total number of sessions 12 sessions for one month and followed up for 6 months and compared to other 20 child with established (partially controlled and uncontrolled) bronchial asthma on their conventional medical treatment only and followed up also for 6 months. We found a significant improvement in many parameters: clinical (symptoms, signs, frequency of attacks, night awakening and the degree of controlling the asthma). Pulmonary functions (VC%, FVC%, FEV1%, FEF25-75%, PEF%, FEF25%, FEF50% and FEF75%) in the group had laser acupuncture sessions. However there were reductions in medication used e.g. Bronchodilators, corticosteroids and mast cell stabilizers in group used multichannel laser acupuncture beside conventional medical treatment. The patients with group used laser acupuncture sessions were shown also a significant decrease in eosinophilic counts, IL-4 and IgE.
