Abstract
The measurement of oral health- related quality of life (OHRQOL) has been increasingly accepted as an essential component of oral health surveys that tend to evaluate the effect of a certain medical condition on all aspects of oral health.
The present study was conducted to assess the oral health status in a group of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and compare it with the parent’s estimation of the child’s oral health related Quality of Life. The study also compared their oral health–related Quality of Life with healthy comparable children.
Sample
A random sample of 40 children with ALL having an age range of 4 to 10 years was selected from El Shatby Children’s hospital in Alexandria. A control group of 40 healthy children with the same age range was also selected randomly from the outpatient clinic in Alexandria University.
Methods
The study is a cross sectional analytical study that was conducted in El Shatby children’s hospital in Alexandria. The study included fourty children diagnosed with ALL (cases) during the chemotherapeutic phase with their age ranging from 4-10 years. Fourty healthy children from the same age group (controls) were selected from the outpatient clinic in Alexandria University. Parents of the children were asked to fill out the oral health QOL questionnaire adapted from the Franciscan Hospital for Children Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (FHC-OHRQOL) questionnaire to assess their children’s oral health related quality of life.
