Abstract

Semantic Web (SW) is an extension of the Web through standards by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The standards promote common data formats and exchange protocols on the Web, most fundamentally the Resource Description Framework (RDF). The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries.
The SW approach is based on the actual mass of metadata availability and the representation of data with a proper knowledge. In order to achieve this approach, it is necessary to generate metadata that is specific, easy to understand, structured and well defined. The SW approach facilitates communication by making the web suitable for computers. However, to enhance current Web, a semantic layer should be added to the web pages to enable computers understand them.
Recently, some annotation tools have been developed to make machine understandable data on the web. However, little number of tools are concerned with the Arabic contents, although, the Arabic language is the mother tongue of more than 300 million of people in 23 countries.
This thesis first presents an overview of the existing Semantic Web concerning the Arabic Language in the domain of Ontology building. Then, two frameworks are proposed to develop a semantic annotation tool for supporting Arabic contents. Finally, a manual Semantic Arabic Annotation Tool (SAAT) is developed. The SAAT is used for embedding rich metadata within Arabic Web documents to markup the Web pages towards the extension of Semantic Web to support Arabic content. The SAAT tool adds Resource Description Framework in Attributes (RDFa) metadata as a semantic markup for the web pages. The RDFa will make the Arabic web pages content more structured and machine processable.
By using the SAAT tool, a contribution towards the vision of the Semantic Web can be made and the field can be opened for Arabic Semantic Web research.
