Abstract Several studies exist on radiation effects on organisms. Although most of the interest has been on humans, during the last few years increasing attention has been directed to other organisms, focusing on an ecosystem perspective with the intention of defining ‘safe’ levels of radiation. Recent nuclear power plant explosions at Fukushima have also heightened public interest in low dose effects. The amount of natural antioxidants in plants can be boosted by elicitation. Elicitors can be grouped into two categories: (i) biotic elicitors e.g. microbes, and (ii) abiotic elicitors e.g. irradiation. It is important to highlight that limited information exists on the potential and extent of enhancing production of secondary metabolites using physical elicitors such as ultraviolet rays, and gamma radiation. Therefore, present study interested in exploring the changes of secondary metabolites and antioxidants in response to enhanced UV radiation and gamma radiation in freshly seeds and collected leaves of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum). This thesis consists of three chapters as following: Chapter 1: Introduction and Literature review includes previous work of scientist and the theoretical background of the radiation, their types, and their beneficial effect on antioxidants. Chapter 2: Experimental Work includes explanation of used techniques and methodology. Chapter 3: Results and Discussion Lies in four parts, as following: 1. The effect of UV treatment on antioxidants of fenugreek extract. 2. The effect of UV treatment on secondary metabolites content in fenugreek extract. 3. The effect of gamma radiation on free radicals scavenging activity of fenugreek extract. 4. The effect of UV irradiation on size & distribution of green synthesized silver nano-particles from fenugreek seeds extract. Finally, The data are representative, and our findings can be used for reference in future studies and in clinical settings. We recommend that companies of pharmaceutical drugs to give this study great attention and consider the present results in the manufacture process of naturally occurring antioxidants. Key words: Free radicals, Antioxidants, Gamma radiation, UV-Rays. |
