Abstract

The thesis is divided into three Parts:-Part I: Phytochemical Study of the Fruits of Apium Leptophyllum (Pers.) F. Muell. ex Benth.Chapter 1: Preliminary phytochemical screening Chapter 2: Extraction procedure and investigation of the pet. ether extract Chapter 3: Investigation of the methanol extract Chapter 4: Investigation of the essential oils of the fruits (ripe, unripe), green aerial parts and roots. Chapter 5: Investigation of the fatty acid content of the fruits. In this parts, the phytochemical investigation of the pet. ether and methanol extracts of Apium fruits led to the isolation and identification of 6 compounds of which 1-nonadecanol, pentacosanol and 7α-hydroxy stigmasterol isolated for the first time from family Apiaceae. The composition of the essential oil of each ripe fruits, unripe fruits, roots and green aerial parts was determined by GC/MS. The fatty acid content of the fruits was investigated revealing the presence of 11 fatty acids.Part II: Biological Study of the Fruits of Apium Leptophyllum (Pers.) F. Muell. ex Benth. Chapter 1: Investigation of the anti-diabetic activity Chapter 2: Investigation of the cytotoxic activityChapter 3:Investigation of the anti-inflammatory activity In this part, the the anti-diabetic, the cytotoxic and the anti-inflammatory activities were investigated. The essential oil of the fruits is potent cytotoxic agent against the MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. 8-hydroxy cuminic acid and fruit essential oil are potent α-amylase inhibitors. The fruit essential oil exhibited remarkable anti-inflammatory activity comparable to that of indomethacin.Part III: Botanical Study of Apium Leptophyllum (Pers.) F. Muell. ex Benth.Macro and micro-morphological characters of the different organs; the root, the stem, the compound leaf (leaflets, leaf rachis, leaf petiole and leaf base) were studied in order to allow the identification of the plant whether entire or in powdered form.
