Abstract

This study aimed at clinically assessing the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on pain, trismus and edema following impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Patients and methods : This study comprised 37 patients of both gender (20 males and 17 females) aged between 19 and 46 years in group I (mean was 32.05±8.67) and between 18 and 44 years in group II (mean was 31.55±8.99 years). The patients were randomly divided into two groups of 20 impacted mandibular third molars in each group. Group I (study group) received LLLT immediately after extraction while in group II (control group), LLLT application was simulated. Pain and facial swelling were assessed on the 1st, 3rd and 7th day following surgery. Maximal mouth opening (MMO) was evaluated on the 3rd and 7th postoperative day. Results : The results of this study showed positive effects of LLLT for postoperative problems following surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molar. Statistical analysis indicated a highly significant difference between both groups (p≤ 0.001) regarding pain, trismus and swelling levels. Conclusion : Within the limitations of this study it can be concluded that LLLT is a method that can be used in reduction of postoperative pain, trismus and swelling after mandibular third molar surgery. KEY WORDS : third molar surgery, complications, low-level laser, soft laser.
