Abstract

In most developing countries like Egypt, the congestion of urban signalized intersections is a major issue where severe traffic congestion causes unnecessary and excessive energy consumption, deteriorates the quality of life and creates many safety problems. Using simulation tools allows simulation of the field operation of traffic systems without subjecting the public to potential hazards at considerably less cost than field trials. The major task of the traffic analysis software is to provide valuable information which affects signalized intersection delays, queue length, saturation flow, number of stops, fuel consumption and levels of service. There are a variety of traffic analysis software packages available to model and analyze an existing or proposed signalized intersection system. However, no traffic analysis software can accurately determine all this valuable information for an actual or proposed field condition. This research is concerned with assessing the signalized intersections using computer techniques. The Highway Capacity Software (HCS2000), SYNCHRO and SIDRA software packages have been used for these purposes in developing countries. Comparison between different signalized intersection software has been performed. Two intersections in Tanta city, namely; the intersection of Alnahas street with Alfath street and the intersection of Alnahas street with Ali Mubarak street have been studied. Different parameters of effectiveness are commonly used to evaluate the signalized intersection operations. These parameters have been considered to evaluate the two studied intersections. Three scenarios were applied to improve the efficiency of the selected signalized intersections. These scenarios are: do-nothing scenario, optimum parameters scenario and optimum cycle length scenario. The results of this research indicated that SYNCHRO software is preferable because it represents the actual traffic situation within signalized intersections. It is more consistent than other tested software according to the statistical evaluation
