Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a syndrome of disordered metabolism, characterized by hyperglycemia accompanied by a markedly diminished insulin secretion usually due to a combination of hereditary and environmental causes. It is the most prevalent chronic disease and cause of death in many countries and a major source of morbidity in developed countries. The metabolism of all fuels including carbohydrates, fats and proteins are altered in diabetes with an increased risk of coronary heart diseases and other complications. However, over the long term, hyperglycemia generates a large number of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species causing damage to all cell macromolecules and organelles. Thus, antioxidant administration would be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes. In particular, renewed interest has arisen in natural products such as propolis for use as more effective and safe antidiabetics. Accordingly, the present work aims to study the impact on the metabolic processes and hyperglycemia and oxidative stress in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic male rats, in addition, to investigate the efficacy of propolis as a hypoglycemic and antioxidant to ameliorate the associated disorders in STZ-diabetic rats. In conclusion, the marked hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects shown by propolis greatly encourage the recommendation of its use as a therapeutic agent in diabetic people as well as assistant agent to minimize the dose and enhance the effect of antidiabetic drugs. However, further investigations about the effectiveness of many compounds isolated from this extract must be tested for cure or protection from diabetes and its accompanied complications.
