Abstract

The employment and employability that formulate the case of the Egyptian labor market challenges can be addressed together in such cooperative education programs. That is because these programs depend on integrating work placement experience to theoretical study. This study entitled “Assessment of Cooperative Education Program in Quick Service Restaurants in Egypt” depended –in its approach- on the importance of this program in transferring real workplace competencies to students/workers. The approach in this present study used the assessment center method. This study also has an assessment approach that depends on three corners; Assessment of Cooperative Education graduates, Cooperative Education students’ performance appraisals and workplace learning characteristics as a part of coop system assessment. This studies brought about some results and conclusions as follows; Students outperformed employees in the other eight dimensions i.e. Work Quality, Attitude, Cooperation, and Ability to learn and understand. There are no significant variances in nine competencies out of thirteen between coop graduates and supervisors. Coop graduates outcompete and lead QSR supervisors in two significant competencies, they are “learning and Development”, and “Interpersonal Effectiveness”. Coop graduates significantly lag the QSR supervisors in two competencies; “Decision Making” and “Delegation and Empowerment”. The workplace learning characteristics survey revealed that the fast food restaurants environment is enriched with learning opportunities while all the performance management system applications should be enhanced to provide students with one of the very important workplace learning opportunities. The study recommended that the experiential learning curricula should be enriched with work place assignments that make best use of the learning affordances given to students in their workplaces. The educational institution should have an approach of assessing the workplace learning environment in terms of formal and informal learning affordances. Finally, the society The Egyptian society and educational institutions should give attention to the cooperative education –applied in higher education level.
