Abstract

Dyslipidemia is one of the significant modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular complications among patients with ESRD the syslipidemia is characterized by a decrease of the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL),an increase of the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and elevated levels of triglycerides (TG). The systematic treatment of dyslipidemia in children with chronic renal disease is controversial because conclusive data regarding the risks and benefits are lacking. Hepatic 3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins), fibrates, plant stanols, bile acid-binding resins, and dietary manipulation are options for individualized treatment. The aim of the present study was directed to evaluate the effects of spirulina extract administration on the lipid profile of children with ESRD on regular hemodialysis among the attendants of the Pediatrics Nephrology unit of the University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University. Fifteen children with ESRD on regular hemodialysis were evaluated before and two months after administration of 1g/day dose of spirulina extract. A variety of laboratory investigations were carried out, including lipid profile parameters, blood cells parameters and kidney functions tests to evaluate the possible effects of spirulina on these parameters.
