Abstract

The contaminants which result from different types of agricultural and industrial wastes are considered to be a source of soil pollution .Some of these sources and types of soil contamination are discussed. It was revealed that available techniques for soil decontamination can be divided in two parts, depending on where the action have place: in-situ or ex-situ. Also, depending on the nature of the process. In order to decontaminate soils properly, the primary contaminants (hydrocarbons such as petroleum residues, solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, which result from different industries and agricultural activities) have to be detected and analyzed. The contaminants which may cause irreparable danger while entering the food chain. A variety of decontamination techniques for soil remediation have been compiled and summarized. This thesis presents an application of numerical models in order to investigate the transport process of contamination through soil layers. Two software products, SEEP/W and CTRAN/W as a part of GEOSLOPE program, are used to analyze the lead contaminant transport. The behavior of contaminants transport through layered soil is tested without using a method of control and with the usage of two methods of control. These are sheet pile method by using steel barrier with different depths and locations or isolation method by using concrete layers. They are used to minimize the impact on the environment. The study results show that the sheet pile method is considered to be the most economically effective and the most flexible method in protecting the soil.
