Abstract

Perceived Stresses of Dental Students in Relation to Academic Advancement in Mansoura, Egypt and Tripoli Libya, Universities. Background and Objectives: Nowadays dentistry has been discussed in the most of the studies as a challenge and stressful field. Students can be stressed due to so many stressors such as academic reasons ,financial problems, health problems or loss of close family member or friend ect. This study aimed toevaluate the potential stressors that affect dental students across all four years of dental education curriculum and their relation to year of study and gender in Mansoura University, Egypt and Tripoli University, Libya. Materials and Methods: 1130 of undergraduate dental students were involved in the study. There were selected from two countries. The sample size of undergraduate dental students was (n=520) in Faculty of Dentistry in Mansoura university, Egypt. Whereas, sample size were (n=610) in Faculty of Dentistry in Tripoli university, Libya. Data was collected using anonymous close ended questionnaire (Dental student problems questionnaire) (DSPQ). Result: The study revealed that the top stressful problem areas for Egyptian students in preclinical and clinical stages were problems related to schooling, curriculum content, laboratory and clinical training, time and personal feeling. Whereas, the top stressful problem areas for Libyan students in the both stages were problems related to evaluation system and life situations. However, the most stressful sharing items between Egypt and Libya were financial obligations, huge syllabus and life situations. Conclusion: Across two countries, Egyptian students in preclinical stages were insignificantly more stressed than Libyan regarding schooling, academic teaching and curriculum content, evaluation methods and personal feeling. Whereas, Libyan students in the preclinical stages were insignificantly more stressed than Egyptian regarding evaluation methods and life situations. However, Egyptian students in clinical stages were insignificantly more stressed than Libyan regarding lab and/or clinical training. While, Libyan students in clinical stages were insignificantly more stressed than Egyptian regarding Evaluation methods, life situation, time and personal feeling.
