Abstract
Aim of the study: This study was conducted to identify the effects of bisphosphonate clodronate on the the offsprings’ molar teeth follicles in rheumatoid arthritis-induced albino rats mothers. Materials and Methods: 44 adult female and 6 albino rats were used in the study. Female rats were divided into 3 groups, (12 control group, 16 rheumatoid group and 16 clodronate-treated group). Group I acted as a control and were induced for pregnancy and injected by saline before and during pregnancy period. Group II; firstly induced for rheumatoid arthritis, then pregnancy and were given saline. Group III; underwent the same maneuver as group II then injected daily by 2mg/kg clodronate bisphosphonate subcutaneously. After pregnancy, groups of animals were subdivided according to the scarification time into 19th IUL, 7th, 28th day after birth. At sacrifice time, the animals were sacrificed and fetuses were extracted. Mandibles and maxillae were dissected, decalcified and processed for Hematoxylin and eosin stain and immunohistochemical stain using α-smooth muscle actin antibody. Results: Rheumatoid arthritis-induced group underwent changes in dental follicle and dental structure, clodronate-treated group revealed improvement in 19th day IUL group with affection of dental follicle at 7th, 28th post-delivery group. α-smooth muscle actin antibody showed a moderate reaction in rheumatoid group but clodronate-treated group exhibited a high reaction. Conclusion: Both rheumatoid arthritis and bisphosphonate affect the dental follicle and tooth development.
