Abstract It is important to distinguish a pseudo class III from a true class III malocclusion. Modified smart wire appliance is easy to construct, patient friendly and very effective appliance in the treatment of pseudo class III malocclusion in growing patients. Early treatment of pseudo class III malocclusion with modified smart wire appliance, which is holding the mandible in it’s most retrusive position, induces an inhibition of mandibular growth along with continuation of maxillary growth and an increase in the lower anterior face height, thus leading to the correction of the ANB. Increase in the overjet is mainly due to protrusion of the upper incisors and retrusion of lower incisors, however a slight skeletal contribution to this increase may be cited. Principle disadvantages of Modified smart wire treatment are that the final alignment of the teeth is impossible without fixed appliance and the Cooperation from the patient is essential for the success of this approach. |
