Abstract

Intravenous (IV) infusion is sterile, aqueous preparations administered intravenously in relatively large volumes. It is achieved through an administration set which attached to an intravenous bottle or bag to administer the fluid into a patient’s vein. It is used to increase blood volume and/or provide nutrients, electrolytes, or medications. Most intravenous infusions are administered to malnourished, dehydrated, or critical care patients, or to patients prior to, during, and following surgery. It is thought that approximately 70% of all patients will have a cannula inserted during their admission. Studies demonstrate that 20 to 80 percent of patients receiving peripheral intravenous therapy develop phlebitis.Aim of the study :This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementing intravenous infusion therapy protocol on nurses’ knowledge and performance at Specialized Medical Hospital.Subjects and Method :A quasi-experimental research design was carried out on fifty female nurses who provide direct care for patients during the study period, willing to participate voluntarily in the study, and accepted to give consents in Specialized Medical Hospital in the following; Cardiology, Hepatology, and Diabetes & Endocrinology unit. The data were collected using two tools: -Tool I: Nurses’ Knowledge about intravenous infusion therapy questionnaire.Tool II: Nurses’ performance of the intravenous infusion therapy checklist.Data was collected during the period from the first of February; 2015 till the end of July; 2015.This study was carried out in three phases: preparatory, implementation, and evaluation phase. Results& Recommendations:- The study revealed that, there was a statistically significant increase of the total mean score of nurses’ knowledge and performance immediately after and one month after implementing the intravenous infusion therapy protocol, compared to before implementing it, while there was a statistically significant decrease in the mean score of nurses’ knowledge and performance one month after implementing the intravenous infusion therapy protocol, compared to immediately after implementing it. The study also revealed that, there was no statistically significant relation in between total nurses’ knowledge and performance score about intravenous infusion therapy and their age, educational level, and years of experience in the pre-test, immediately post-test, and after one-monthpost-test. So, the study recommended that, continuous in-service training programsabout intravenous infusion therapy in Specialized Medical Hospital for the purpose of updating the knowledge and skills of nurses administering intravenous infusion therapy.
