Abstract

Two sets of field experiments were carried out at the Agriculture Research Center Stations during 2010/2011 and 2011/ 2012 growing seasons. The first set of experiments aimed to estimate mean performance, stability, phenotypic and genotypic correlations and path analysis for days to heading and maturity, plant height, number of grains / spike, number of spikes /m2, 1000-kernel weight and grain yield / fad. of sixteen wheat genotypes grown under normal and water stress conditions at five location, representing five Egyptian governorates (Alexandria, Gharbia, Sharkia, Bany sweif and Sohag). Whereas, the second set of experiments aimed to estimate combining ability, mode of gene action and heritability for earliness, flag leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, flag leaf area, spike length, number of spikelets / spike, number of spikes / m2, number of grains / spike, 1000- kernel weight and grain yield / plant of six wheat genotypes and their 15 F1 crosses grown under normal and water stress conditions at the experimental stations of Kafer El-Hamam Sharkia. The results revealed significant differences among wheat genotypes for all studied characters under both normal and water stress in all environments, the highest grain yield was detected in the Line 20 followed by Shandweel 1, Gemmeiza 11 and then Sids 12 under normal irrigation. However, Gemmeiza 11 followed by Sids 12, Shandweel 1 and then Line 21 had the highest grain yield under drought stress conditions. AMMI model indicated that Sakha 93 for days to maturity, plant height and number of grains / spike. Whereas, Line 36 and Battell-1 were stable for grain yield and number of spikes/ m2 under stress environment. These were highly significant differences among parental wheat genotypes and their crosses for all studied traits. Wheat cultivars Sids 12 and Shandweel 1 had the highest productivity. General and specific combining abilities were significant for all studied characters under both environments Sids 12 was good combiner for all traits, except number of spikes / plant under both environments Narrow sense heritability estimate was moderate to high for earliness characters, plant height, chlorophyll content, flag leaf area, spike length, number of spikes/plant and number of spikelets/spike under both irrigation and water stress. Furthermore, it was low to moderate for number of grains/spike, 1000-kernel weight and grain yield/plant under irrigation and stress conditions
