Abstract

Antibiotics or antibacterials are types of antimicrobials used in the
treatment and prevention of bacterial infection. They may either kill or
inhibit the growth of bacteria.
Aminoglycoside is a medicinal and bacteriological category of
traditional gram-negative antibacterial therapeutic agents that display
bactericidal activity against gram-negative aerobes and some aerobic
bacilli.
The use of aminoglycosides like amikacin is restricted due to their
potential toxic effect. As they may cause nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity,
hepatotoxicity and neuromuscular blocking effect.
The present study was carried out to investigate amikacin induced
side effects. Aiming preventing these side effects through vitamin C
administration.
Sixty adult male albino rats weighing 120-140 g were divided into
6 groups, 10 rats each as follow:-
The 1st group: Rats in this group were not medicated and left as
control.
The 2nd group: Rats in this group received vitamin C at a dose of 100
mg/kg b.wt. once daily orally for 7 consecutive days.
The 3rd group: Rats in this group received amikacin at a dose of 25
mg/kg b.wt. once daily intraperitonially (I.P) for 7
consecutive days.
The 4th group: Rats in this group received vitamin C at a dose of 100
mg/kg b.wt. once daily orally for 7 consecutive days.
