Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using subtitled and non-subtitled authentic video clips based-activities in developing EFL preparatory stage pupils’ listening comprehension skills. To fulfill the purpose of the study, two instruments were designed and conducted by the researcher. A pre-post listening comprehension test was administered to assess the pupils’ listening comprehension skills level before and after being exposed to the treatment and an authentic video clips evaluation checklist was designed to select and evaluate the appropriate video clips that were employed in the experimental treatment. The study adopted the quasi-experimental design. The participants of the study consisted of 120 male and female pupils randomly chosen from EFL first year preparatory stage pupils in ”Tanboul Preparatory School”. They were randomly assigned into three groups: two experimental groups (The first experimental group was exposed to non-subtitled authentic video clips based-activities while the second one was exposed to subtitled authentic video clips based-activities) and one control group that received the conventional teaching following the prescribed Teacher’s Guide procedures. Results of the study revealed that using multimedia authentic materials based-activities whether subtitled or non-subtitled were substantially effective in developing EFL pupils’ listening comprehension skills. In addition, it was found that subtitled authentic video clips were more effective than non-subtitled authentic video clips in developing the sub-skills of comprehension as listening for sequence and listening for specific information. A number of recommendations concerning the use of multimedia authentic materials and activities were presented.
