Abstract
This thesis treats the expression of Arab identity in the poetry of three Al-Mahjar women poets in the light of the post-colonial and feminist critical trends, in the poetry of three contemporary Arab female poets, namely: Etel Adnan (Lebanese-American), Nathalie Handal (Palestinian-American) and Dunya Mikhail (Iraqi-American), a topic which, to my knowledge, no one has yet dealt with. The thesis compares and contrasts the poetic expressionistic achievement of the three poets in respect to their political and feminist experiences.
The thesis is divided into five major chapters and a conclusion. The first chapter situates Adnan, Handal and Mikhail within the context of “Al-Mahjar experience” and the Arab-American literary, political, feminist and historical background. The second tackles the profound relationship between the turbulences of war and Gothic paraphernalia in the poetry of the three poets. The third chapter analyzes the expression of the content of Arab identity via the framework of poetic narration. The fourth approaches the visual styles of feminist assertion in the verse of the three poets. The fifth handles the theme of Arabism in regard to the most recent revolutionary political endeavors and upheavals which occur currently in the Arab world. Finally, the conclusion traces an assessment of the findings of the survey.
