Abstract

Autologous bone marrow transplantation is an intervention for a variety of life-threatening diseases. Stem cells transplantation procedures continue to be improved, making transplantation a treatment option for many patients. Aim to assess the care provided to patients who underwent autologous bone marrow transplantation during the rehabilitation period Research Design: A descriptive analytic study. Sample: A convenient sample was comprised, a total number of 130 patients, during the six months of their rehabilitation period. Setting: The study was conducted in Sheikh Zayed Specialized Hospital at Bone Marrow Transplantation, outpatient clinic. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection. First tool: A self-administered questionnaire for the patients and their caregivers was divided into six parts: Socio-demographic data, past and current history of the patients, knowledge of patients and their caregivers regarding autologous bone marrow transplant, assessment care provided by caregivers to the patients activities of daily living and home environment sanitation. Second tool: Physical examination of the patients’ body from head to toes, Third tool: patients Medical record analysis. Results: The study revealed that the poor knowledge about bone marrow transplantation was 33.1% poor among patients, and 48.5% among caregivers. The total activities of daily living were 64.6% for dependent patients, 30% for partially dependent and 5.4% for independent patients. As regard home environmental sanitation 63.2% of the patients lived in sanitary environment. Recommendation: All patients and their caregivers need specialized rehabilitation programs and discharge plan for improving their knowledge about the disease and how to provide care during occurrence of complications.
