Abstract

Abstract
Activities of daily living (ADL) are daily routine actions that play a prominent role in the lives of blind children. A blind child’s quality of life is enhanced by the execution of ADL that contribute to the individual’s formation and development. Counseling program may help to increase mothers’ awareness toward blind child needs, help them coping life problems. The aim of this study was to develop and implement counseling program for increasing the mothers’ awareness toward daily living activities of their blind child. Setting: This study was conducted at The Demonstration Center for the Rehabilitation of the Blind Child. Sampling: The subject of this study included all blind children and their mothers who attended in preschool children’s care department at The Demonstration Center for the Rehabilitation of the Blind (number= 31 mothers& 32thier children) who had congenital blindness without multi-handicapped as quasi-experimental sample. Tools: For data collection three tools were used, 1st tool: an interviewing questionnaires for the mothers who have blind children and their blind children; include five parts socio demographic data, mothers’ knowledge about activities of daily living (ADL) of the children with blindness, mothers’ practices related to caring of their blind child, child’s health needs assessment, and health problems of the blind child. 2nd tool: Scale of ADL for blind child and 3rd tool: mothers’ coping patterns scale toward their blind child. Results: The most of mothers had satisfactory ’knowledge about daily living activities of their blind children, the most of mothers had correct practices related to caring of their blind child , the mothers’ coping patterns were adaptive coping toward their blind child& the most of blind child were independent regarding their DLA after counseling program implementation. Conclusion: The study concluded that the counseling program showed remarkable improvement in mother’s knowledge and practices regarding daily living activities of their blind child and their blind had a favorable impact on self independence regarding their ADL. The most of blind child were achieved of their health needs and the most of them didn’t complain from health problems, also the mothers’ coping patterns were adaptive coping toward their blind child after counseling program implementation. Recommendations: The study recommended that social and educational rehabilitation of blind children to be active members in the community and not a burden on others. Increase family and public awareness about genetic counseling including pre-marital risk counseling, directed towards the prevention of many inherited blinding diseases.
