Abstract

Increasing maternal body mass index during pregnancy is
a risk factor for a number of health conditions. The aim of the study is to assess the effect of obesity on pregnancy course (Maternal and fetal) in obese pregnant women. A descriptive study was conducted at Outpatient Antenatal Clinics at Ain Shams Maternity University Hospital
Sampling: A Purposive sample including (86) woman was selected in the study according to certain criteria and pregnant at the first of the 2nd trimester and (BMI30Kg), used tool: A Structured interviewing questionnaire a) to assess Socio-demographic characteristics, previous medical, obstetric, surgical history of mother, family history, and present pregnancy history b) Maternal and fetal observation sheet to assess maternal & fetal condition.
Results: The results of the study indicate that maternal Obesity seems to have a negative effect on pregnancy course; both maternal and fetal. highly statistically significance in symphysis fundal height measurement , investigation of blood sugar pus cell in urine and fetal movement with maternal BMI, while Statistically significant in the kick count, edema, hemoglobin level, maternal present complaint, fetal measurement and fetal heart rate pattern with maternal BMI.
Conclusion: Based on the findings revealed by the present study, the study can conclude that: maternal obesity is associated with adverse pregnancy effect such as Gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, vaginal infection, urinary tract infection and anemia, fetal complications as macrosomia, and LGA.
Recommendation: Obesity is a significant public health concern and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. Further research and clinical trials are needed in the field of obstetrics to contribute towards evidence based care of obese women. And the quality of care provided to obese women must be evaluated.
