Abstract

Human-plant is a relationship as old as mankind, since prehistoric times man has relied on plants for their basic needs, not only for food and clothing, but also to alleviate diseases. Plants have formed the basis of sophisticated traditional medicine systems that have been in existence for thousands of years and continue to provide mankind with new remedies. Plants are unique in their ability to synthesize carbohydrates, fats and proteins that constitute three major food classes for human race. Family Boraginaceae, is one of the most important plant kingdom, which includes a wide variety of medicinal plants. So it is of interest to choose T ehrenbergii Schwienf.ex Boiss. as a herbal plant belongs to this family. The aim of the study is identified its chemical constituents and detect its biological, biochemical & pharmacological activities. The results showed that, the aerial parts extract has high percentage of phenolic compounds and 11 compounds were isolated. The acute toxicity examination for aqueous methanolic extract of T ehrenbergii aerial parts clearly indicated that, the extract under investigation is non-toxic and safe in rats up to 4500 mg/kg b.wt. The aqueous methanolic extract of Tehrenbergii aerial parts shows a potent hepatoprotective activity. It alleviated significantly the toxic effect of carbon tetrachloride in rats by improvement of different biochemical parameters compared with carbon tetrachloride treated group. The aqueous methanolic extract showed a potent cytotoxicity against liver carcinoma cell line (HEPG-2) at concentration 38.4 ug/ml and lung carcinoma cell (A- 549) at concentration 55.6 ug/ml.
