Abstract
Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) is a therapeutic strategy that combines different lung expansion maneuvers including incentive spirometry, diaphragmatic breathing exercises, posterior costal expansion, lateral costal expansion, apical costal expansion and coughing exercises. IMT aims to increase strength of inspiratory muscles, increasing functional residual capacity (FRC), increasing total lung capacity, maintains patency of the smaller airways and preventing post-operative pulmonary complications.
