Abstract Language plays a central role in cross-cultural communication.According to Kasper (1997), cross-cultural communication requires a mastery of linguistic knowledge and pragmatic competence (1997, 312). In conversations, interlocutors understand one another; how does this understanding occur? What are the capacities and knowledge that make interlocutors communicate with one another easily? The answer lies in our pragmatic knowledge (Davis, 1991, 4). Therefore, Language teaching should enhance learners’ pragmatic awareness and competence in the target language. |
