Abstract

Despite the great number of the translations of the meanings of the Holy Qur᾽an from Arabic to English, most of them are riddled with flaws which have resulted in the misunderstanding of its intended meanings and the deformation of its original message. Inadequate translations of this sacred text, though, are greatly ascribed to inability to comprehend its syntactic, semantic, cultural and pragmatic features which both contribute to the efficacy and elevation of its style and constitute an obstacle for its translators, who encounter the difficult task of emulating its sublime mode of expression. Drawing upon a syntactico-semantic, cultural and pragmatic approach, the present thesis aims to explore the syntactic, semantic, cultural and pragmatic aspects of the Holy Qur᾽an which cause problems when translating its meanings into the receptor language. It attempts to bridge the gap between the SL and TL syntactic, semantic, cultural and pragmatic differences by analyzing and assessing the translations of Ali, Arberry, Irving and Ghali. The thesis shows that the lexical similarities among the four translators amount to 57.87%, while the differences to 42.22%, which means that the gap among the translators is not wide; that the syntactic similarities among the translators amount to 56.9%, whereas the differences to 42.22%, which means that the gap is not wide either; that the cultural similarities among the translators amount to 18.75 %, while the differences to 81.25%, which means that the gap is strikingly wide; and that the pragmatic similarities among the translators amount to 64%, while the differences to 36%, which means that the gap is not wide. Further, the thesis provides appropriate translations for the flawed ones made by the four translators in question. In so doing, the thesis serves to minimize the shortcomings ensuing from the translators᾽ miscomprehension of the SL text. The thesis concludes by showing that some of the translators under concern have managed to render the Qur᾽anic text almost accurately, while others have failed in their undertaking.
