Abstract

The present study represented the utility of some low-cost adsorbents as corn cob powder and peanut husk for removal of Pb2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ ions from wastewater. The batch method was employed; parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose and initial metal concentration were studied at temperature 25 ± 2 °C.
The adsorption increases with increasing of adsorbent dose, while the adsorption capacity (qe) decreases with increasing of sorbent dose. The optimum pH corresponding to the maximum adsorption ions removal at pH 6.
Pb2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ ions were adsorbed separately onto the adsorbents very rapidly within the first 30 minutes, while equilibrium was attained within 3 hour for Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ ions, But for Mn2+ is 4 hours.
The adsorption decrease with increasing of initial metal ions concentrations.
Peanut husk more effective than corn cob powder on removal and uptake of metal ions at all parameters, removal % of Pb2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ ions by peanut husk at biosorbent dose 5 g/L and initial metal concentration 20 mg/L was 100%, 100%, 100%, 87% and
75% respectively, But removal % of Pb2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ ions by corn cob powder was 100%, 83%, 65%, 35% and 35% respectively.
The Langmuir isotherm better fitted the experimental data since the correlation coefficient (R2) for the Langmuir isotherm was higher than that of the Freundlich isotherm for five metals. The essential characteristics of Langmuir dimensionless constant separation factor or equilibrium parameter, (0 < RL < 1), So adsorption is favorable.
Application for the treatment method to real wastewater gave promising results as follow: removal % of Pb2+, Fe3+, Cr2+, CN-, Zn2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ ions by corn cob powder were 100%, 91%, 39.5% , 38%, 28%, 25%, 24%, 20%, 20% and 15% respectively and removal % of Pb2+, Fe3+, Cr2+, CN-, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ ions by peanut husk were 100%, 95%, 56%, 51%, 45%, 41%, 38%, 38%, 30% and 24% respectively.
Figure (48) illustrated a simple constructions and equipments were used in the building up of the treatment unit.
Tables ( 40) showed low construction cost for industrial wastewater treatment plant. Tables (41 and 42) showed both low costs the removal of heavy metals from real industrial wastewater using corn cob powder and peanut husk.
