Abstract Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a subset of communil:i:lliug hydrocephalus, it is rema.d(able for two reasons: de mentia, I ) I t is one of the few t reatable causes of 2) Nc urora diologists arc u s ually i nvolved in rnaking the diagnosis. It consists of the clinical triad of gait distur bance, demeH!ia, and incontinence i n a palieut who radi ographically has communicating hydrocephalus, ic, ventricles dilated out of proportion to any su lcal en largement (which distinguishes it from atrophy). Over the 35 years since it was first described, t he definit ion of NPI-l has been expanded. Initiall y il wa:; eon idered tu ue i d iopathic, at present, common usage includes any form of c hronic communicating hydrocephalu s, a nd even a few noncommunicating forms such as aqueductal stenosis. Because all these patients may present with a similr clinical triad, an d they may all be treated with aventricu lopcritoneal (V P) shunt, this expansion of the definition is probab l y appropriate, although certain seconda by features distinguish the idiopathic form from communicating hydrocephalus with known causes. |
