Thesis Title: A Program Based on Habits of Mind for Improving the Level of Academic Achievement among Gifted Underachievers
The current study aimed at improving some habits of mind (Persisting, Thinking Flexibility, Questioning and Posing Problems, Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations, Thinking Interdependently) among gifted underachievers using a training program especially designed for that purpose. The program aimed to improve the level of academic achievement among those students.
The participants of the study were (10) gifted underachievers with I.Q 120 to 140. They were from 15 to 16 years of age. Those students (7 males, 3 females) were from King Fahd Distinguished Language Academy in Nasr City.
The study used the following tools: Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices Test (Standardized by Amina Kazem et al., 2005), Stanford Binet Intelligence Test (Standardized by Safwat Farag, 2011), Family socioeconomic Status Scale (Prepared by/ Abd ElAziz Elshakhs, 2013), Habits of Mind Scale for Adolescence (Prepared by/ Abd ElAziz Elshakhs et al., 2015), Achievement Test in Arabic for the First Secondary Stage (Prepared by the researcher), and the Training Program Sessions (Prepared by the researcher).
The study has revealed the effectiveness of the training program used with the study participants for developing habits of mind among gifted underachievers. The program has an effect on improving the level of academic achievement in Arabic among those students.
