Abstract Design of detached breakwaters for shore protection is not an easy job because the response of the shoreline to these structures is governed by at least 14 wave, geometric and sediment related parameters. This study documents an approximate method for design of detached breakwaters system. Eight design charts based on general wave conditions and three design charts based on the actual yearly wave climate of the Egyptian northern-coast were constructed using the available numerical model (GENESIS).The current charts can provide useful information for practical purposes when selecting proper dimensions for detached breakwaters system with limited data sets. A parameteric study of shoreline changes behind detached breakwaters is also presented. Calibration and verification of the model was done using field data for measured shorelines. The present thesis contains seven chapters as follows : Chapter (1) : Introduction :contains an introduction for the research, the scope of the research, and summary of contents. Chapter (2) : Literature Review : contains a brief description of the fundamental physical processes involved in the nearshore zone. An overview of the most commonly used shore protection works, coastal sediment models, the definition of the offshore breakwaters, the theory of this system with some of the previously published woks are also presented. Chapter (3) : Theoretical Background of ”GENESIS” : contains the fundamental relations, controlling wave transformation and sand transport in the model. Chapter (4) : Calibration and Verification Of The Model: contains the calibration and verification analysis of the model for a prototype case (Marabella beach, Egypt) with a limited field observations data for a prototype simulation. Chapter (5) : Parameteric Study Of Shoreline Changes Behind Offshore Breakwaters : discusses the effect of the most important parameters governing the shoreline response to offshore breakwaters (wave properties, geometrical parameters of detached breakwaters, and sediment parameters). Chapter (6) : Design charts and Applications :contains the construction of offshore breakwaters design charts for both general wave conditions and actual yearly wave climate of the Egyptian northern-coast. Application of the design charts for some shoreline segments along the Egyptian northern-coast is also given. Chapter (7) : Conclusions and Recommendations Appendices: contains a list of references and the Arabic summary. |
