Abstract

Antimicrobials with bactericidal activity remain a hallmark in the control of bacterial infections. Notable among these drugs are norfloxacin highly effective against mainly gram negative and also some gram positive bacteria . Norfloxacin is a new fluroquinolones antibacterial agent used in veterinary field for prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases of poultry, herbivorus and swine. Norfloxacin is used for the control of salmonellosis, mycoplasma and collibacillosis affecting poultry industry that causing major economic losses.
The most prevalent side effects of norfloxacin are hepatotoxicity resembeled by increased in ALT, AST,ALP and decreased in serum total protein and albumin, nephrotoxicity resembeled by increased in serum creatinine , urea and uric acids, neuromuscular blocking effect and changes in some heamatological parameters.
The current study was outlined to look into norfloxacin induced adverse effects. Hopefully seeking a possible way out through vitamin E coadministration.
Twenty four adult male albino rats weighting 150-200g were allocated into four groups, 6 rats each as follow :
The 1st group:
Rats in this group were left as control.
The 2nd group: ( norfloxacin treated group).
Rats in this group received norfloxacin at a dose of 10mg/kg b.wt. orally once a day for 14 days.
