Abstract

The present study was conducted on 20 Egyptian male children aged 12-13 years, who were completely healthy.
These children were subjected to:
1. Full history including:
a. Assessment of daily dietary calcium intake through Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ).
b. Assessment of duration of sunlight exposure (hours per week).
c. Assessment of duration of physical activity (hours per week).
d. Assessment of socioeconomic status according to the criteria of El-Bohy (1983).
2. Physical examination including:
a. General and systemic examinations.
b. Measurement of weight, height and BMI together with calculation of their SDS’s.
3. Blood samples were collected for estimation of serum levels of calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase.
4. Assessment of whole body BMD, lumbar spine BMD, left femoral neck BMD, whole body BMC, lean body mass and whole body fat.
The study showed that:
• The mean value of whole body BMD was 0.90± 0.05 g/cm2.
• The mean value of lumbar spine BMD was 0.61±0.06 g/cm2.
• The mean value of femoral neck BMD was 0.82±0.08 g/cm2.
• The mean value of subtotal body BMD was 0.83±0.05 g/cm2.
• There were non significant correlations between DEXA parameters and age.
• There were non-significant correlations between dietary calcium intake and all DXA parameters.
• There were non-significant correlations between sunlight exposure and all DXA parameters.
• There were non significant correlation between all DEXA parameter and socioeconomic factors.
• There were non significant correlations between EL-Bohy socioeconomic scoring and all DEXA parameter .
• There were highly significant positive correlations between weight SDS and each of whole body Z score, subtotal body BMD, and lean body mass. There were significant positive correlations between weight SDS and each of Whole body BMD, Whole body BMC and Whole body fat.
• There were highly significant positive correlations between weight and each of whole body BMD, whole body Z score, subtotal body BMD, and lean body mass, whole body BMC. There were significant positive correlations between weight and each of Lumbar spine BMD, Lumbar spine Z score and whole body fat .
• There were highly significant positive correlations between height SDS and each of subtotal body BMD, whole body BMC and lean body mass. There were significant positive correlations between height SDS and each of whole body BMD, whole body Z- score .
• There were highly significant positive correlations between height and each of subtotal body BMD, whole body BMC and lean body mass. There were significant positive correlations between height and each of whole body BMD, whole body Z- score.
• There was a highly significant positive correlations between BMI and whole body fat. There was a significant positive correlation between BMI and fat percentage.
• There was a highly significant positive correlations between BMI SDS and whole body fat. There were significant positive correlations between BMI SDS and fat percentage .
• There were significant negative correlations between serum calcium and each of lumbar spine BMD, lumbar spine Z- score and femoral neck BMD while other DXA parameters were not significantly correlated with Other laboratory bone parameter.
• There were non-significant correlations between physical activity and all DXA parameters.
