Abstract

The basis of the scientific calibration for. radioisotope
detection which are taken in this thesis have three different techniques, these are nominated as
follows:-
(1) Pulse height analyzer based on HPGe detector used for gamma activity identification,
(2) Liquid scintillation technique for alpha activity detection of Ra- 226 and Rn- 222
(3) CR - 39 solid state nuclear track detectors for detecting the activity due to the whole
radionuclides emitting alpha radiation.
The results proved the existence of some radionuclides of Uranium series; such as
234pa, 2uRa, 221Rn , 21spo, 2t4Pb , 2t4n·

And Thorium series; such as
22sAc, 212Po, 212Bi, 211Pb, 2osTI
In addition the fram of this thesis, the radiation dose has been estimated for selected
environmental samples taken from the west cost of Suez gulf around petroleum fields between Raas
Ghareb and EI-Ghardaka.
The samples were collected randomly from the site at deferent depths. The environmental samples
under investigation were laboratory prepared to·200-mesh site. The measuring systems were
calibrated for their utilization for counting the environmental samples. The experimental
statistical variance is found to be
(1) ± 15 % in case of PHA counting system,
(2) ± ( 15- 18 ) ’Yo in case of liquid scintillation,
(3) ± (18- 22) % in case of nuclear track
(I) In Case of HPGe:-
The results showed a detection of U- 238 and Th ..:.
232 series in the environmental samples. The detected activity in these environmental samples are
found to be in the range 1.5 x 104 ± 15.1%-4.5 x 104 ± 15.3% statistical
3

variance for Uranium series Bqlkg and range 3 x 10

± 15.7

% -2 x 104± 15.3 % for Thorium series Bqlkg for 238 U and
232Th respectively.
The corresponding dose equivalent is ranged over 7.3- 22
± 15% and 0.9 -20 ± 15 % respectively for 238U and 232Th.
(II) In Case of Liquid Scintillation.
Detected alpha activity was ranged over
4.51 ± 20.3 % - 204 ± 20.5 % Bq/gm for 226Ra
3.21 ± 20.4% -233 ± 20.2% Bq/gm for 222Rn
(III) In Case of SSNTD.
Detected alpha activity by ”CR- 39”was found to be ranged over 22.6 ± 18 % - 219 ± 19.5 %
