Abstract

Nursing has been identified as a stressful occupation. Hence nurses are subject to a variety of
work-related stressors in particular nurses who are working with psychiatric patients are
especially vulnerable to the effects of stress. where as the occupational stress results from the
interaction of multiple risk factors, such as the physical environment, work content and
organization and diverse psychosocial components. In addition, many are poorly trained to cope with
the emotional and behavioral problems of these residents and are repeatedly fr.1strated by their
inability to manage these recurrent problems.
The aims of the study are to:
• Identify the various job stressors as perceived by nurses caring for psychiatric patients and
to;
• Plan, implement and evaluate the effect of an intervention program on nurses canng for
psychiatric patients for alleviation of their stress.
The sample was composed of 60 nurses who are working in the Institute of Psychiatry (G1 n = 30) and
others are working in El-Abbessya Mental Hospital (G2 n = 30).
To collect data of the study, thefollowing tools were used:
* Interviewing questionnaire schedule, was included two parts, part one concerned with demographic
data of the psychiatric nurses in the Institute of Psychiatry (G 1 ) and El-
Abbesya Mental Hospital (G2) about their age in years, years of
experience, marital status and their attitude toward working in psychiatric nursing field. In
addition to part two which concerned with 77 items that are pertinent to the different stressors
facing psychiatric nurses throughout their daily working life. The participants were requested to
describe the frequency of the stressful events that encountered by them using the terms always,
sometimes and never experienced.
* Coping strategies sheet, this 69 items questionnaire was developed to identify the thoughts and
actions used by the psychiatric nurses to cope with a particular stressful encounter.
The participants were requested to indicate to what extent they used a particular coping strategies
using the terms never, sometimes and always used.
Psychometry
* Gordon personal profile, which consists of eighteen content areas of a descriptive phrases. Each
area contained four phrases, each of which represents one of the four characteristics. Each
characteristic was separately evaluated the total score was 36 points. A 10 week programme was carried out through 21
sessions, 11 sessions ”5 hours” for the theoretical part and 10 sessiOns ”9 hours” for the
practical part. Duration of each session was varied from 20 to 30 minutes for the theoretical
part and from 40 to 60 minutes for the practical part including periods of discussion and questions
at the start of lecture and feedback and summary. However, the researcher met the nurses in each
setting twice weekly.
The main results of the study revealed that; there was a difference between both groups of
psychiatric nurses (group!, group 2) in experiencing the work - related stress but work stress
intervention program has been effective in reducing their work-related stress perhaps as a result,
work- related stress are likely to continue to reported by the two groups of nurses.
As a results of this study, the following recommendations were formulated:
• Regular meeting should be held between staff nurses and their upper hierarchy to allow
expression of feelings and discuss stress situations that occur in the work place.
• Stress counseling can provide support and help individuals to resolve problems related to the
work place.
• The impact of stress intervention program tends to be short lived and limited to those
receiving the intervention.
Therefore, there is a need for continuing such program whereas the effects of this program are
likely to be beneficial in reducing stress and burnout, and in increasing interpersonal support
amongst staff.
• Staff need proper training before statting a job and managers should ensure that aspects of
self-development and self awareness are built into training courses.
• Most researches should be encouraged to explore the effects of work stresses on the psychological
state of the nurses (such as level of stress perceived by the nurses).
