المستخلص

The study aimed to evaluate the predictive ability of financial periodic reports of Egyptian Stock Market listed companies. In order to achieve that aim the study included the following:
Discussing the theoretical aspects of periodic financial reports in terms of its concept, importance and objectives, as well as periodic financial reporting practices whether in Egypt or abroad.
Discussing the difficulties of preparing periodic financial reports and its predictive value.
Analyzing the literature review to determine the research gap.
The applied part of the study was achieved in two stages, In stage one we calculated the variations in the financial statements of the companies using a set of financial indicators, We found that there are evidences of variations in financial indicators for twelve of the companies, some due to problems of preparing periodic reports ,while others due to low number of net profit or sales in the quarter where there is a variation in. In the second stage we tried to answer the questions of the study using profitability and activity indicators.
Main results of the study include:
The initial analysis of the data showed that there is no variations in financial indicators of four companies which are: Alexandria Mineral Oils Company, United Housing , Mobinil and Telecom Egypt. The data of these companies have also a high predictive ability.
The predictive ability of periodic reports increases with the use of the cumulative reports (which is in line with the current situation of publishing periodic reports in Egypt).
The first quarter profits has a low predictive ability in forecasting annual profits. This may refer to the fact that companies usually begin the fiscal year with kind of optimism that may lead to overestimation of profits and a lower estimation of costs.
The predictive ability of financial reports is affected by:
Sector Type
Nature of the industry
Preparation and measurement problems
Prediction using sales number is less affected by conservative administrative accounting decisions, while prediction by using net profit will be more affected by these decisions, This refer to the allocation of fixed costs, which is the main problem negatively affects the predictive ability.
The results applying MAPS test on rates are better than applying this test on values.
