Abstract

Oxidative stress occurs during many pathological processes in an organism, free oxygen radicals are neutralized by the antioxidant system and a balance is maintained. When this balance is impaired, however, tissue damage may result, It is known that increasing free oxygen radicals in newborns damages the cell membrane by way of lipid peroxidation,
Malondialdehyde (MDA) is one of the fairly reactive metabolic products resulting from the effect of free oxygen radicals on tissues and from a series of reactions during lipid peroxidation ,The plasma MDA level is a sensitive indicator oflipid peroxidation and thus of oxidative stress. The perinatal period is a significant period which affects the rest of the newborn’s life .
The aim of this study was; first to assess the value of malondialdehyde (lipid peroxidation product) measured in the umbilical cord blood as a marker of oxidative stress, and second was to study the relation between MDA level some mother and newborn related factors.
This study was conducted on 60 newborns (20 newborns delivered by NVD, 20 newborns by elective cesarean section, and 20 newborns by emergency CS)
The study was carried out inside the delivery room department and the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in the period from May 2012 to November 2012.
• There was no statistically significant difference regarding length of the baby, weight, sex, or ponderal indexin the 3 groups included in the study.
• The detected high MDA level in cord blood of newborns delivered by CS compared to those born by NVD may indicate that C.S. represent an oxidative stress.
• Thus, measurement of umbilical cord MDA level may have a role in prevention and/or treatment of expected oxidative stress and its consequent cellular damage.
