Abstract This work concerned with investigating the effect of wetting on the behavior of jointed rock slopes intercalated with layers of claystone or shale. The behavior is investigated in terms of displacements, stresses and mode of movements resulted in due to softening of claystone layers. The behavior of upper Mokattam plateau is considered as a case study for the effect of the change ofthe environmental condition on rock slopes, at which severe erosion; rockfalls; and road damages are recorded. Field obsel\!ations of the rockfall occurred in the plateau in the last ten years had been carried out. Geotechnical investigation of the strata constituting the plateau had been performed. The characteristics of limestone and claystone layers had been determined as well as the effect of wetting on the material properties. Finally the cause and the mechanism for rockfall are concluded. Based on laboratory tests, a mathematical model of shear strength and deformability loss of claystone or shale due to wetting is developed. |
