Abstract The present study is a comparative study on the removal of heavy metal ion (Cu (Il)) from copper ions solution by two high molecular weight compounds one of an organic nature, and the other from inorganic nature. These compounds are hydrazide poly methyl acrylate (HP MA) which prepared from the reaction of a prepared poly methyl acrylate (PMA) with hydrazine hydrate (N2~.H20) in the laboratory, and the other compound is modified clay (activated bentonite) which is used in oil well drilling, and obtained from local company. The experimental results with the modified clay show that it is an adsorption reaction that follows Langmuir isotherm model, and Pseudo second order kinetic model. The maximum removal of copper ions was obtained at low copper ion initial concentration, high adsorbent dosage, lowtemperature, and high agitation speed. The reaction of HPMA with copper ions is a chelating reaction which is similar to the removal of heavy metal ions by EDT A. The trend of the results with HPMA resemble to those of the adsorption reaction with modified clay. Comparing the maximum removal of Cu (Il) from solution under the experimental conditions used shows that the adsorption reaction with clay gives little better results than those obtained with the modified organic polymer. It is clear from the results obtained that both compounds within the experimental range investigated cannot be considered as a method for the removal of waste stream within the experimental range investigated as the residual concentration is higher than the limits which are allowed by the environmental limits which are allowed by the low which is5 ppm . These results may be due to the high initial copper concentration used in this work and low dosage of either compound. |
