Abstract

The industrial wastewater treatment techniques have wide applications in many plants.Treatment methods such as coagulation, filtration, precipitation, adsorption and advancedoxidation process are used to remove organic material from wastewater. Adsorption is oneof treatment methods for oil removal and organic material from the wastewater where thematerial transfer from liquid phase on the surface of solid phase. Natural materials such asnuts, olive wastes, apricots stones, rice and bagasse can be used as low cost adsorbents toremove oil and organic materials from the industrial effluent. In this study, raw bagasse was used as law cost adsorbent for the removal of oilfrom wastewater effluent. Chemical activation is applied on bagasse to prepare twoadsorbents beside raw bagasse.Three adsorbents raw bagasse (B), first activated bagasse (AB1) and secondactivated bagasse (AB2) were characterized by Fourier Transformer Infra-Redspectra analysis (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) test.Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to study the effects of differentparameters such as: contact time, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature on % removalof oil.The adsorption kinetic data was fitted with pseudo first order, second order kineticmodel and Elvoich kinetic model.Pseudo first order model is more suitable than second order model for applicableadsorption kinetic models onto bagasse for B, AB1and AB2 respectively fornonlinear models.Four adsorption isotherm models namely Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Raddushkevich &Temkin were used to analyze the equilibrium data. The Langmuir isotherm which provided the best fitted to B&AB1 while theFreundlich isotherm which provided the best correlation for oil adsorption for AB2.The maximum adsorption capacity was found equal to 277.778, 270.270and333.333mg/g for B, AB1&AB2 adsorbents respectively.Thermodynamic parameters were evaluated &the adsorption process was found toan exothermic process.Fixed bed adsorbent experiments were conducted to study effect of bed depth of thebed and flow rate of effluent through the bed.The increase of bed depth of the column gives a high removal of oil and low finalconcentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD).The reaction of fixed bed adsorbent experiments is controlled by film diffusion. The results prove that bagasse sugarcane can be used as effective and economicaladsorbent for oil removal from wastewater.
