Abstract

Aim of study: This study was performed to evaluate clinically the healing of bone defects after application of xenograft alone and mixed with Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) following periradicular surgery in human subjects. Also to evaluate histopathologically their efficacy on healing of bone defects in animals. Materials and methods: A total of 33 teeth in 26 patients were included in clinical part of this study. After root end filling was completed, the defect was filled with Bio-Oss xenograft alone in one test group (group A) and mixed with PRGF in the other test group (group B). In the control group (group C), no graft was used. However bilateral tibias of 12 rabbits were included in the animal part of this study. After creation of bone defects, the defect was filled with Bio-Oss xenograft alone in one test group and mixed with PRGF in the other test group. In the control group, no graft was used. Results: After 1 year of clinical follow up, group B showed the highest success rate (81.8%) followed by group A (72.7%). While group C showed the lowest success rate (45.4%). No statistically significant differences in healing outcome between two test groups.
