Abstract

Pragmatics is the study of the ability of speakers to communicate more than what is explicitly saidThe interpretation of the meanings the speaker intends to convey by using particular words is influenced by some factors as the hearers’ assumptions or the context. The thesis aims at conducting a pragmatic study of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth, by employing three tools: Deixis, Implicature, and Speech Act Theory. Deixis is concerned with the utterances which we produce in our daily life, namely, pointing at someone, something, or a particular time or place. Wharton uses deixis to highlight the interpretive possibilities of an utterance in terms of whom it has been directed to and the time and place of the utterance. The notion of implicature is associated with the implicit meaning. Violating the maxims of conversations demonstrates the intended meanings Wharton tries to communicate with her readers. Speech acts are utterances which serve different functions in communication. By using these three tools in The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth, the messages of Wharton are clarified. Edith Wharton is one of the greatest American writers. She is a female novelist and short story writer. She often writes against the upper class society of New York where she was born. Edith is a Pulitzer Prize winner. She won the Noble Prize in literature in 1927, 1928 and 1930. The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one (Introduction and approach) introduces the history and definitions of pragmatics, and it explores Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth. Chapter two (Deixis in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth) offers a theoretical framework of deixis for analyzing the two mentioned novels. Chapter three (Implicature in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth) introduces implicature and then the analysis of the two novels from the point of view of implicature. Chapter four (Speech acts in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth) is concerned with speech acts and analyzing some examples of speech acts selected from the two novels. Chapter five (Conclusion and recommendations) is a summary of the results and conclusions of the research.
