Abstract

This thesis aims at offering the intended meaning in Ralph Ellison’s invisible Man from a pragmatic perspective. The pragmatic tools used in this thesis are Speech Acts, Implicature, Diexis. Speech Act theory analyzes utterances as performing actions. The study of linguistic meaning includes two disciplines: semantics, the study of the conventional meanings carried by words and sentences, and pragmatics, the study of how speakers use words and sentences to convey meaning. This thesis surveys several core issues in pragmatics. Pragmatics is generally attributed to British philosopher charles Morris (1938-1971). Pragmatics examines social rules that affect choice. It also takes into account the social status of the speaker and cultural features such as politeness and formality. It concerns with content as well as explicit and implicit linguistic features. A subfield of pragmatics is the speech act theory, which studies indirect and direct speech. Particular topics include: Indexicals (words like I, here, and now) and Implicature are also discussed in this study. By using these linguistic tools, the real message of Ralph Ellison in his novel Invisible man is clarified. Besides, the explanation of certain communicative situations helps the non-native speakers to understand and produce speech.
