Abstract

Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC), other related pathogens, and Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) are among the food-borne pathogens mostly associated with sever diseases in man. This study aimed to isolate these pathogens from 100 raw market milk samples in Mansoura city, Egypt. By applying uniplex and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, 22 Escherichia coli (E. coli) were positive for either the stx1, stx2 and/or eae genes. In addition, 17 L. monocytogenes isolates were positive for hylA gene. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that E. coli isolates were highly resistant to amoxicillin and sulphamethoxazole. However, these isolates exhibited high sensitivity to gentamicin. L. monocytogenes isolates showed high percentage of resistance to oxytetracycline. High percentage of sensitivity was identified against norfloxacin. Recently, there is a great awareness concerning the use of the herbal materials as natural food additives. For this reason, it seems necessary to study the antimicrobial effects of some natural oils, including watercress, basil, parsley, and hot green pepper oils, against some isolated bacteria. As a final conclusion, some natural oils can be successfully used to control and prevent the presence of some pathogens in dairy products.
