Abstract

This research aims to provide a pragmatic analysis of the science fiction language of one of the novels of the American writer Ursula K. Le Guin The Left Hand of Darkness by focusing on speaking act theory. This novel attempts to explain the importance of a pragmatic analysis of the science fiction language from the author’s perspective and the characters of the novel. We should also mention that there is a great potential use for the application of this theory on the Le Guin’s novel, which is mentioned previously. Since speech acts theory analyzes verbal speech and its application to the novel The Left Hand of Darkness is an evidence that there are different types of speech acts in the novel. Chapter One contains a theoretical framework for the analysis of pragmatics of science fiction. Moreover, pragmatics can be defined as a branch of linguistics that was developed in the last seventies. This branch of knowledge distinguishes between two meanings the first is explicit and the other is implicit. Pragmatics aims to explain the speech acts that often take place between two or more people. Science fiction is a kind of literary art that depends on imagination, which usually includes a set of perceptions and reflections on the world of present or future technologies. Chapter Two deals with the application of speech acts theory according to Austin and Searle on Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel, The Left Hand of Darkness. This chapter explains the theory and its application of the novel. Chapter Three that is named implication of communication and mind speaking in Le Guin’s novel, The Left Hand of Darkness. This chapter offers an explanation of the theory of implicature and its application to the novel. Chapter Four contains the pragmatics of epistolary first-person narrative mode observations and transcribed communications sent to the Ekumen in Le Guin’s novel The Left Hand of Darkness. Conclusion presents the findings and recommendations that have been reached by the researcher.
